Subtitles in Language Learning: Effects of placement and Highlighting on Gaze, Mental Effort, and Comprehension
What happens when a seemingly simple UI decision changes the way people learn? This question inspired my master's thesis, where I explored the split attention effect in dual-subtitle video interfaces.
Using eye-tracking technology, I investigated how subtitle placement and synchronized word highlighting influence visual attention, cognitive effort, comprehension, and overall user experience.
The study reveals how small interface choices can shape the way users process information, offering insights for the design of more effective and user-centered learning experiences.
